The Information Return System software allows us to truncate the payee's ID# on the 1099's but not for W2's. The option is there on the screen but is grayed out so it cannot be selected. Should be able to print the recipient copy showing only last 4 digits of SSN. It works on the 1099's but not the W2's. I've asked this same question the past few years but it NEVER gets fixed. I saw where one customer's answer was to mark part of the SSN out with a black magic marker. Really? that's the only answer? Come on, Intuit - fix this!! You make it work on the 1099's so make it work on the W2's as well.
FOLLOW-UP: I got an answer from Intuit. They told me the IRS & SSA require full SSN for filing. Yes, I know that. I've done this for over 30 years. But I'm talking about the EMPLOYEE's COPY. It has been allowed & recommended to truncate the SSN to the last 4 digits only for security. I see these all the time when I'm preparing tax returns. So I want to be able to do that on the EMPLOYEE's copy of W2s. The option is there on the screen but is grayed out. Please activate this option.
