Description

Signal is a messaging app with privacy at its core. It is free and easy to use, with strong end-to-end encryption that keeps your communication completely private.

• Send texts, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Signal uses your phone’s data connection, so you avoid SMS and MMS fees.

• Call your friends with crystal-clear encrypted voice and video calls. Group calls supported for up to 40 people.

• Stay connected with group chats up to 1,000 people. Control who can post and manage group members with admin permission settings.

• Share image, text, and video Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Privacy settings keep you in charge of exactly who can see each Story.

• Signal is built for your privacy. We know nothing about you or who you’re talking to. Our open source Signal Protocol means that we can’t read your messages or listen to your calls. Neither can anyone else. No back doors, no data collection, no compromises.

• Signal is independent and not for profit; a different kind of tech from a different kind of organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit we are supported by your donations, not by advertisers or investors.

What’s New

Version 7.43

• The “Files” filter in the media gallery can help you quickly find PDFs and other attachments, like the TXT that really could have been a text.
• We switched the emoji reaction picker in the Stories tab to work with the dark theme, but the right reaction can still provide enlightenment.
• VoiceOver accessibility improvements, including a label for the call ring button and new functionality to indicate when a message includes a quoted reply.
• We also updated the design of the QR codes throughout the app. They’ve always looked good in front of a camera, but they’re practically ready for a photo shoot now.

Not happy...

As someone who is security minded I was extremely disappointed to see that upon accessing my contacts Signal advertised me to everyone else who had the app. No way to shut that off in any preference setting. Can you say Privacy breach? Ridiculous.

Developer Response ,

That's great to hear that many of your contacts have moved away from insecure legacy protocols and are using Signal. If you do not want your contacts to see you as a Signal user, then you will have to register for Signal with a number that you choose to only share with select people. Under normal circumstances, hiding that you're using encryption is almost impossible. It's more effective to make it more pervasive.
