The Thompson Method team are incredibly supportive, I don't think I would've managed to breastfeed my first daughter without them! I'm now pregnant again with twins and just completed the Beautiful Breastfeeding Programme with Pamela Armstrong. Pam is a great communicator and covered extensively all the principles of the Thompson method and how all of it applies to feeding two babies at the same time. I knew the team was very helpful and reliable from last time, it was no different doing the twin course with Pam. She could answer all my questions using her own experience and knowledge while sticking close to the principles set out by Dr Robyn. I felt nervous about twin breastfeeding going into the calls and now feel confident and ready to give birth to my babies and get started!

This method really gave me encouragement when I needed it. I was in so much pain from my son's poor latch because of a tongue tie and while he was working on relearning to breastfeed after using a nipple shield for several months. The price for the program seemed good for how many course videos there are: preparing for breastfeeding during pregnancy course, for the first golden hours, and courses for the months afterwards. They also offered a Facebook group to ask questions and presumably support other members.

There were some helpful tips such as trusting yourself to be able to breastfeed, readjusting the latch until it is more comfortable, and making sure you are comfortable and not hunched over while breastfeeding. Eventually, the videos I watched became repetitive after a while. While still useful information, there wasn't too much variety.

My main issue was the Facebook group. The part I did like about the group was that I could ask specific questions and a qualified midwife would give advice and link to previous videos that answered or were close to the specific issues that I would ask.

The part that really irked me is how they don't allow you to relay your story in any way in response to other members because they deem any comment about what you did for your child as "advice." I tried to respond to another member in the group who asked me a direct question and the admins deleted my comment. I tried reaching out to Joanne to discuss how this was hurtful and she acted like she was listening, but kept directing it back to how it would cause "confusion" because women complain about "too much conflicting information." She then gave a script of how my responses would be more "helpful" to other members who just want medical information and not to hear stories. (Clearly some do want stories and actual human interactions and not a robotic and grossly positive manner of speaking.) It just put a bad taste in my mouth. I had suggested that they make it so no one can comment. Joanne wants it "interactive" but she obviously doesn't want it to be real. She claimed that they don't have time to verify information from all of the comments because of all the members there are. They had time to look at and delete my comment; so I found this explanation dubious.

They don't really take suggestions. It's their way or the highway. This group would be fine if you're simply looking to get your questions answered or follow what others are asking. If you don't talk like they want you to then you may have a difficult time like I did. This program has good points as I stated above, but overall wasn't for me.

I just wanted to say thank you to The Thompson Method! My little miracle baby was needing to come earth side early due to my own medical conditions (portal vein thrombosis and splenomegally) and was born via cesarean at 34+3wks. I was determined to EBF and had to hand express and then pump for the first week while she gained strength in the NICU. Although, we unfortunately had a couple midwives who insisted on me BF forcefully and trying to intervene by being hands on and one even bruised me, I came very close to giving up. However with the amazing support from my husband and the tools I had learnt through TTM I remembered one thing that made me determined to give my daughter what I knew she needed. “Mother and baby are built perfectly for each other”.

She thrived early and was showing all signs of wanting to latch but would get tired. By day 5 I was able to give her 3-4 BF a day. Day 10 we were allowed to go home due to the success of her feeding so well from me! Fast forward to 18months+2weeks (3 weeks ago), my daughter had her final BF. Although I was sad and shed a tear or 2, I was so proud of myself. The only reason she stopped, I believe, is because I’m 12 weeks pregnant.
I’m incredibly grateful for finding TTM and have recommended it to all my pregnant friends!
Again thank you! The best 18.5months I could have ever dreamed of!

The Thompson Method is a gentle, evidence based method towards a gentle birth and pain-free breastfeeding experience. It was created by Dr Robyn Thompson, a midwife with over 50 years experience who was awarded a PhD for her research into why so many women were being discharged from hospital with painful nipple trauma and other breastfeeding complications such as engorgement & mastitis. The Thompson Method challenges the forceful breastfeeding techniques, linked with painful nipple trauma, that are commonly taught in most hospitals. It’s for ALL women who want to breastfeed, but particularly those giving birth in the hospital system because it offers a gentle alternative to help women AVOID the most common and painful breastfeeding complications. But it’s more than just the technique on how to get a good latch. It is that, but it’s so much more... Visit www.thethompsonmethod.com to find out more

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Rose. I’m deeply sorry to hear that some aspects of our program didn’t fully meet your expectations. It is an absolute honour to be part of every woman’s journey, and we take that responsibility very seriously.

We’re glad to hear that the breastfeeding courses and support you received were helpful during your journey. However, we understand your frustration regarding the rules in our Facebook group. Our intention in limiting peer-to-peer comments is to create a safe, supportive space where information is consistent and evidence-based. We aim to protect mothers from the confusion that can arise from conflicting advice, especially during moments when clear, expert guidance is most needed.

While we know that peer-to-peer support can be beneficial—and is widely available in other groups—our focus is on providing expert guidance through The Thompson Method. This approach ensures the best outcomes and allows us to offer a level of consistency and trust that we take great pride in.

That said, we appreciate your feedback and will continue to reflect on ways to better support our community while staying true to our mission. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts. We value your voice and wish you and your family all the best in your breastfeeding journey and beyond.

Warm Regards
Joanne Thompson

Saved my BFing journey

I came across TTM when I was almost ready to give up feeding, in tears one night with my 2 week old, seriously thinking how I was going to continue feeding through the pain from the cross cradle technique that I was taught at hospital. I was so close to being broken. Since using TTM our feeding transformed and I couldn’t be more thankful. I understand how our feeding works and feel really informed and empowered to make changes (when needed) from what I have learned through this method. My baby boy Hugo is a very happy and settled baby, I credit so much of that to our BFing journey and what I have learned from Dr Robyn.

A beautiful experience

Dr. Robyn’s amazing program helped me to breastfeed my second and third children. I just hadn’t found her in time for my first. Her program was better, more supportive, informative, and gentler than the four different courses I had paid for, the multiple lactation consultants I’d tried to get help from with my first child, the pediatrician, and the hospital staff. After the system failed me with her, I was determined to find the right help when I found I was expecting my second. Thank goodness for Dr. Robyn!! I am incredibly thankful and appreciative for this journey I successfully fed my second child for a full year without issue or fear before choosing to stop. My youngest is now almost 2 and still going strong. 😁❤️

From Suffering to Success

After having my first baby and struggling for 2 1/2 years with painful feeding, I perservered anyway not realising I was permanently damaging my nipple. We also struggled with colic and reflux issues for 2 years, sleepless nights. It was HORRIBLE. When I had my second baby, we started seeing the same symptoms and I could not put myself through the pain and sleepless nights any longer. I decided to google colic and reflux issues and painful nipples and somehow came across the Thompson Method. I watched a few videos and started to really feel hopeful that maybe there was a reason why I was struggling so much. I decided to purchase the program and implement some of the techniques discussed and we LITERALLY had a completely different baby within 7-8 days. The colic and reflux symptoms completely subsided and with a few tweaks on the breast, the painful feeding disappeared as well.

I can't recommend The Thompson Method and the wonderful team highly enough. They saved my breastfeeding journey from further pain and suffering and we successfully tandem feed for 2 years.

Listen to me mums!! We spend soooo much money on our babies but never invest on educating ourselves. This is the BEST INVESTMENT money can buy. The knowledge you gain is invaluable and sets you up for success. They even have prenatal course material as well which is great to run through with your partner.

Knowledge is power. If we can equip ourselves and know what to expect and what decisions to make when things don't go the way we planned, at least we're equipment and feel prepared.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR and invest in your own breastfeeding education.

Superstars

I can not thank Dr Robyn Thompson and her team enough ! I reached out to them when my daughter was 4 months old and I honestly thought I was beyond help and would have to stop feeding her. After a few calls and changes to what I was doing everything changed and I am still breastfeeding without any issues. They gave me my confidence back and helped me when I was really in a bad place with breastfeeding. There was no pressure and no false promises but they listened and helped me and genuinely cared about my situation. I will never forget how kind they all were during that time. Dr Robyn and her team truly care about the work they do and the mothers they help. I am so grateful to them for their support. I would highly recommend this course and this lovely team.

Contradictory advice

If all you take from their advice is the hold then great, but the rest of their advice is terrible. They contradict themselves in their videos and 1-2-1 advice.l which makes you wonder if they even watch their own videos. Examples: baby will refuse bottle if full/ baby will take from bottle as long as you offer it. Stop all supplements/ but ones you drop in your drink are ok (on video). Make baby feed every 3 hours/but if it’s very hot feed whenever. Told me to make baby wait 3 hours between feeds, no suggestion of slowly extending this. So I made baby wait, ignored cues and baby became overly hungry and refused to breastfeed at all. Set us back completely. Baby now screams as soon as put in Thompson hold. Had to source advice elsewhere which has been more successful.

Hi Ahsf, I'm not sure if this is your real name, but I'm really sorry to hear that this has been your experience. I have sent a request to check that you're a member of our program. I can assure you that Dr Robyn and her entire team would never suggest that you ignore your baby's cues. Quite the contrary in fact. One of Dr Robyn's most common mantras is to encourage women to be guided by their maternal instincts. Our mission is to improve breastfeeding outcomes for mothers and babies, and we are 100% passionate about this. I would very much be willing to speak with you personally to see if we if or where we could have improved. Dr Robyn is a midwife and breastfeeding specialist with 50 years experience, and if our program has not met your expectations, we'd be happy to provide you with a full refund. We understand that every mother and her baby are unique. What works for one woman may not be appropriate for another. There is no 'one size fits all'. Please do reach out to us so that we can resolve this situation - whether that's by refund or a consultation with one of our experienced practitioners. I do hope to hear from you. Best Program Out there

I bought this program when I was pregnant with my fifth baby because I didn't get past a whole week with my first four breastfeeding. I searched around my local area first, but the lactation specialist told me they don't provide prenatal breastfeeding education. I started Google searching for something related to prenatal breastfeeding, and the Thompson Method showed up.

I decided to look through the free club first, and then decided to purchase the program because I found the information so helpful. Because of the Thompson Method, I was able to breastfeed my little one for 32 months; she never had formula and didn't even like milk until I weaned her. I had no nipple trauma and did not have any problems with my breast milk supply. The best part of the program is that you have 24/7 support whenever you need it. Even at 1 am, someone is there to help you. The modules and the information you get, you don't in the hospital system for example, the stages your breast milk production comes in within those first 3-4 days after giving birth. I would highly recommend the program to anyone because it is informative, based on research, and you have a whole support system to help you with any questions you have. The other bonus is pain free breastfeeding from the beginning using a gentle approach to breastfeeding not the forceful methods taught in the hospital system.

Thank you Dr. Robyn and the team for your help through my breastfeeding journey, especially with my last baby and only breastfed baby. It was bitter sweet and such an amazing bonding experience.

Don’t buy into the cult

This is a total cult, and complete waste of money.

The Facebook support group is run by a bunch of robot admins who only ever offer you video snippets of the same clips by Dr Robyn Thompson. There’s no capacity for other women to offer you their advice or experiences because their comments get deleted! I only know this as I posted a comment on another woman’s post with my experience (almost identical to hers) and suggestion and the comment was swiftly removed. My little one had a tongue tie and we went to an IBCLC to get it released; all the advice given to me on the group was about reducing my supply which would have prematurely ended my breastfeeding journey! I cannot stress enough how limited and rudimentary the advice given on this course is. They regurgitate the same videos, the same advice, all the while not really telling you anything or offering any solid solutions. All the information on this course can be found on La Leche, CDC, WHO, and NHS websites. SAVE YOUR MONEY! The fact that you won’t allow women to support other women is absolutely maddening to me.

Hi Rosemary, gosh I'm really disappointed and quite shocked to hear you refer to our organisation as a cult. I'm really sorry that you have interpreted our aim to minimise confusion by restricting peer to peer advice as being a bunch of robots. You see, our role is to share information about The Thompson Method, which is based on my mother's life's work as a midwife of 50 years. Many women report feeling overwhelmed by the oversupply of well meaning advice found online and from friends, family and some health professionals. There are so many groups around where peer to peer advice is encouraged - ours is not one of them. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but we are very clear in our group rules, so that members understand that it's not like other Facebook groups. The guidance provided cannot be specific to every woman, because every woman is unique. Our global admin who offer 24/7 guidance and support understand the importance of sharing information with our members, based on The Thompson Method. Their role is to share information so that members gain the knowledge to make their own informed decisions. We believe it's a responsible way to provide guidance and support. I'm really sorry that you found the support to be repetitive. I couldn't find a post from you, so unfortunately I'm unable to comment on your specific experience. Perhaps it would have been best for you to request a refund based on our 14 day money back guarantee. I can assure you, we are not a cult and as much as it greatly offends me, you are entitled to your opinion. However, I would be most happy to speak you personally, to listen to how we could improve the guidance and support we provide to our members. Please feel welcome to reach out to me, as my mobile phone is found on our website. I wish you well. Warm regards, Joanne Thompson (Dr Robyn's daughter)

The Thompson Method and Dr Robyn saved…

The Thompson Method and Dr Robyn saved my breastfeeding journey. I had a really difficult and painful breastfeeding experience with my first baby, so when I got pregnant with my second, I knew I didn't want to go through the same problems again. I saw an ad on Facebook about the method and decided to purchase. It was the best investment I have ever made. Once I had my second baby, with the help of Dr Robyn, I was able to breastfeed my son pain-free and enjoy those 15 months! I will be forever grateful for this wonderful Woman who dedicated her life to helping mothers and their babies!

I cannot stress this enough

I cannot stress this enough - please do not take this class.

If I have one regret about anything I did to prepare myself for baby, it is most definitely take this course. It is advertised as absolutely “pain-free”, but that is certainly not the case for most women based on my experience in the FB group (as well as my own experience.)

The online courses are super redundant and encourage you to not trust IBCLCs so you don’t turn to help outside the Thompson Method when things don’t go smoothly. I’ve seen many women post in the group that they are experiencing excruciating pain in the group following the Thompson Method only to be told by an admin (through and automated message you’ll see over and over on other posts) that they’re either doing the method wrong and must require “tweaking” or otherwise blame the mother for using things that certainly don’t hinder the breastfeeding experience in the way they claim, for example, drinking soda, taking supplements, using a pacifier. They will then encourage the mother to keep trying and if the problem persists, pay even MORE (hundreds of dollars more) for an online consultation. Other commenters are threatened with removal from the group if they share any advice or their experience. It is all very centered on shame and fear.

I personally had a baby with a tongue tie who was tearing my nipples apart using the Thompson Method. He did not have the oral motor skills to simply latch on his own, as the Thompson Method claims. Moreover, if breastfeeding were as simple as bringing your baby to your breast, why would a breastfeeding course be necessary in the first place? It’s utterly ridiculous and a total scam. I waited way too long to see a lactation consultant because the Thompson Method SWORE it would only make matters worse. Luckily, I trusted my gut and finally caved to see one. Only then did my pain finally cease and all the issues we were having resolve.

I could go on and on. This course is the worst, the people behind this “method” are only in it for the money, and it is an absolute SCAM! Just don’t do it!!

Not for everyone.

This method is not for everyone. It's one perspective among many. I have been extremely successful in my breastfeeding journey -- but I quickly abandoned the Thompson Method.

The method is anti-epidural and anti-medical system and really not for those who have high-risk pregnancies. It is quite vague on other practical information like baby burping, reflux, etc.

I would encourage everyone who looks into this breastfeeding method to look at others as well. And definitely listen to lactation consultants (although they can be hit or miss as well).

Abigail, I'm so sorry that your experience with our program did not meet your expectations. I'm really disappointed also that you feel we promote a 'one size fits all' approach, as that is something that Dr Robyn definitely does not encourage - quite the opposite in fact. We truly value your feedback, and I have requested some more information from you, so that we can look into this further to see where we could have improved. Please be reassured that we are not anti anything. Our aim is to share information so that women understand the possible implications, in relation to breastfeeding. I'm really sorry you feel this way, and we hope to hear from you soon. Warmest regards, Marie - Team Member

As a Chiropractor and mum

As a Chiropractor and mum, I see women and babies every day with latch dysfunction, failure to thrive and emotional upheaval of traumatic births or breastfeeding events.
I’m so glad to know the Thompson Method and recommend it to all my pregnant clients before the overwhelm of new parenthood begins!
Forever grateful I learnt it myself before my first child, who EBF until 2yo easily and without fuss.

Plenty of ongoing support and access to addition videos which is great.
Thankyou Dr Robyn and your wonderful team for creating and providing such a knowledge bank of how simple and easy breastfeeding can be!

A huge impact on my breastfeeding journey

The Thompson Method played a crucial role in supporting my birthing and breastfeeding journey with my second child. Reflecting back to my first experience, I was young, inexperienced, and lacked confidence. However, when I discovered I was pregnant again five years later, I knew things had to be different this time, and indeed they were, all thanks to The Thompson Method.
During my pregnancy, I made the decision to invest in the program, and it turned out to be a transformative decision. The wealth of information and resources provided me with the confidence and understanding about breastfeeding and what to expect. When I was in the hospital, I stood firm in my decision to use The Thompson Method and advocated for my rights.
Today, I'm thrilled to say that we have successfully reached one year of exclusively breastfeeding, and we're still going strong. From the very first feed until now, the knowledge I gained through The Thompson Method has been nothing short of phenomenal. The support I received from The Club has been outstanding, and I'm incredibly grateful.
Thank you, The Thompson Method, for making such a positive impact on my breastfeeding journey and empowering me every step of the way!

So grateful to have this information

I just wanted to say a big thank you to Dr Robyn and The Thompson Method. Being a FTM I wanted to be as prepared as I could and you did that for me. The nurses and midwifes at the hospital were extremely forceful with their techniques and I had sore nipples on day one. Thankfully I unlearned their methods and quickly reverted back to what I had learned in your program. I am 2 weeks in and breastfeeding has been going amazing. I know that wouldn't have been the case had I not had this information. Thank you for everything, especially to the amazing team in the breastfeeding club for your support.

Pros and cons

I did the entire thing. Watched every video (something like 96 videos) from start to finish as I anxiously waited for the arrival of my first baby. Mind you, I purchased the course 1.5 years ago so it may have changed since, I wouldn't know.

Pros:

- I felt very confident with breastfeeding from the beginning and knew exactly which advice I wanted to heed and which I wanted to ignore, which was amazing because during my 3 day hospital stay after having my first baby, I swear every midwife tried to give me a different strategy for breastfeeding. I just nodded politely and only took on the help of those who said things that aligned with the Thompson's method. I'm sure I would've felt insanely overwhelmed if I hadn't done a bf course beforehand.

- The course was extremely comprehensive and covered a wide range of potential issues. The course also has a big section about labour and labour interventions and really helped to instill confidence in me and my body for labour. This made a huge difference for my labour experience and resulted in me confidently refusing unnecessary interventions (I accepted the necessary ones) and listening to my body to make the right calls for how I wanted to birth my son which definitely resulted in much less healing time.

- The private fb group is great as you can post questions and a member of her team will respond to your question. This is SO HELPFUL because even months after having my baby, I've had questions crop up about breastfeeding and it was great to have someone to ask.

- The premise is completely true. I am one of the few people I know who had a beautiful and easy breastfeeding journey from the very beginning and am still happily bf my son 14 months later. No complications, no pain, nothing. By the time I left the hospital I was feeling confident, which is so important as this is your baby's only source of nourishment. It took a lot of stress out of those early days for me and I'm so grateful to my friend who gave me the advice to learn about bf beforehand.

Cons:
- Some of those videos are LONG, long winded and the information is extremely repetitive. Honestly the videos are also a bit boring so it took a lot of time and brain power to get through them. Such a pity as it's great info but who has time to sit there and watch hours and hours HOURS of some lady talking.

* My tip to anyone who goes ahead and purchases the course is to skip the very long 1 hour+ Q&A videos. Read the titles and descriptions and skip if it sounds exactly the same as the previous ones because from my experience, the info is the same. Just ask questions on the fb group if you feel like you missed anything. And definitely watch at 1.5x speed.

Hi Bridget, thank you for your honesty in sharing your experience with our online program. We truly welcome any constructive feedback, as we're committed to improving our program so that we can feel confident in offering women a program that is beneficial and helpful. It warms my heart to hear how prepared you felt for your birth and breastfeeding journey, and I'm so pleased that you felt supported and nurtured by our private community and admin team. I really appreciate your comments about some of the videos being a bit long winded. I do acknowledge that some of the prenatal sessions are long, and as such, we have just completed a complete revamp of the Prenatal Sessions, so that they are more concise and easy to follow. We understand how important this is for pregnant women, particularly!

Thanks again for your feedback Bridget. Please remember that you have lifetime access to both the program and the Club. We'll be here for you whenever ready for your family to grow. Warm regards, Marie - Team Member
