The perils of Canadian Spa tub ownership (Thunder Bay)
We own a Canadian Spa Thunder Bay hot tub. It was delivered on the 16th May 2015. We paid £5500 for it. We bought it from a local garden centre from a Canadian Spa rep whom was stationed there.
The first problem was that when the pumps were running is was very, very noisy. I asked technical support about this and didn't get anywhere. Apparently it was normal, but I had no other tub to compare it against. After tracking down where the noise was coming from, I took the side panel off to find that one of the pipes was fitted so close to the shell that it was vibrating against it. I fitted some foam in-between the pipe and the shell and the problem was fixed. If i wasn't relatively handy this problem would be persisting today!
Just after two years we had a leak and all the water left the tub (just after the warranty expired!). I identified that the leak was coming from one of the two pumps. Canadian spa said we needed a new pump to the tune of £500. I investigated the problem further myself. I found that the wear seal between the wet and dry ends had worn away. The replacement part was a few pounds for for just £20 I could buy the complete wet end. Why so cheap? Well, albeit the Canadian Spa rep going on during his original sales pitch about this being a Canadian tub and not a rubbish Chinese one, the pumps are both Chinese Bathtub pumps, made in china........ Begs the question what is Chinese.
A few months later the other pump failed with the same problem.
Why am I writing this review now? Well, recently the jets started to fail in our tub. And there are a lot of them! The plastic has literally perished in them. They are all brittle to the touch and I expect them all to fail soon enough. I cannot find aftermarket ones for the Canadian spa tub we own. In fact there is very little aftermarket products available for any Canadian spa tub as far as I can tell - no one seems to do them. One of the online retailers that provide aftermarket jets said they don't touch Canadian Spa. So for me, it's OEM only. The cost to replace them all is more than the original purchase price of the hot tub! So there you have it. Not 5 years into ownership and the tub is effectively written off. We have agreed a discounted rate for the jets with Canadian spa but its getting to the point where we need to consider whether we are just throwing good money after bad and give up on it.
Canadian spa said we might have used too much chlorine which is why the jets are perishing. I don't know if this is true or not but it was not mentioned to us as something we needed to keep and eye on when we were discussing maintenance with Canadian spa. The risk of damage from the chemicals which are necessary to maintain the tub should have been high on the agenda if it is indeed a problem! Could just be an excuse though....
Other points of note:
1) The filter cover is a rubbery material. It was jet black but within a few years it progressed into a horrible green mold type colour.... It's an awful design flaw - it doesn't need to be this type of material. Cost to replace? £200! The customer really shouldn't have to pay for design flaws!
2) The filters are over £100 a go. These need to be replaced regularly but due to the unique thread on them none of the far cheaper, equivalent filters available from general tub stores fit.
