The game began with both teams struggling offensively, with a quick series of three-and-outs. Virginia Tech struck first, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter to lead 14-0. Syracuse finally got on the board with a 44-yard field goal before heading into halftime down 14-3.
In the second half, Syracuse rallied with a series of impressive plays. Justus Ross-Simmons's first catch of the season came in the form of a 55-yard touchdown pass, followed by LeQuint Allen’s short leaping touchdown, cutting the deficit to 21-18. A fumble recovery set up another touchdown for Justus Ross-Simmons, giving them a 24-21 lead.
However, Virginia Tech responded quickly, reclaiming the lead at 28-24 after a 15-yard touchdown run. The Hokies extended their lead to 31-24 with a field goal, but Syracuse equalized with another short touchdown from Allen, making it 31-31.
In overtime, Allen scored again, putting Syracuse ahead 38-31. He finished the day with 21 carries for 121 yards with 3 touchdowns. The game concluded with LB Marlowe Wax stripping the ball from Virginia Tech’s QB, sealing the victory for Syracuse.
