Working with Themes

Themes are used to change the appearance of your Confluence site or spaces.

Confluence comes with a single site default theme installed. You can download and install other themes from Atlassian Marketplace.

These site themes are different to the user-choice themes, which include a dark theme, and are applied to the user’s view of Confluence. Users can switch between these user-choice themes, unless:

  • you’ve used the feature flag to deactivate user-choice themes

  • you’ve installed a custom site theme, and the customization removes the user-choice themes

The information below relates only to a theme that’s installed to your whole site or individual spaces.

If you have installed a custom site theme on your whole site or individual spaces, the theme may hide the availability of user-choice themes. In this situation, users won’t be able to switch between light and dark themes. Contact your site theme provider for more information.

Once a theme is installed it can be applied to the whole site or to individual spaces.

To see the themes installed in your site:

  1. Go to Administration menu , then General Configuration , then Themes.

  2. You'll see a list of all the themes installed in your site.

When a new space is created, whichever theme is applied to the whole site will be applied by default to the new space. The space theme can then be changed by anyone with space administrator permissions for that space.
