Apps for Education.

Inko (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV)

Inko is a collaborative whiteboard app for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. The app lets users draw together on a same virtual canvas using several devices as well as interact on Apple TV using the remote. Inko is backed with advanced features like vibrant colors and beautiful pixel-free drawing display that stays sharp when zooming in. The app also takes full advantage of Apple Pencil or Logitech Crayon on latest iPad 6th gen. (see Hardware Recommendations below).

  • Why is this app suited for classroom use?
    • Students can collaborate on a project and interact in real time on the same canvas. Everything can be displayed on a screen/projector connected to an Apple TV, and the teacher can even interact with the drawing using the remote as a pointer through the free Apple TV companion app.
    • Excellent for group work as everyone can collaborate actively unlike with a digital whiteboard where only the teacher or one student at the time can interact with the board while the others are watching.
    • Easy setup. One person is the organizer and, with only one tap in Inko’s menu, they can create a group for others to join. No network / Wi-Fi setup, as it uses peer-to-peer technology: nearby drawing groups are automatically detected.
    • Inko can be used during remediation classes for small exercices. The teacher can show/interact with the student(s) or the students can collaborate among themselves to find the answer.
    • Ideal for brainstorming sessions, just like with a regular whiteboard, in class as each student can write their own input on the subject discussed. Because it’s digital, you can make a PDF with all boards that have been created through the session and share them with everyone.
    • An internet connection is not required as devices “talk” together directly in a peer-to-peer fashion.
    • Nomadic connectivity also allows for outdoor use: a picnic at the park, a trip to the woods,…
    • Participants’ labels on drawing trails are visible to see who is currently drawing.
    • Possibility to leave a group with just one tap and then go join another.
    • Incredible drawing experience thanks to the extensive support of Apple Pencil.
    • The ephemeral highlighter tool is particularly useful in class as it allows the teacher (or a student) to point out something on the canvas without interfering with the drawing in progress.
  • How many people can use Inko at the same time?
    • 8 people per drawing group without Wi-Fi access point.
    • 12 people per drawing group with Wi-Fi access point.
  • Inko (Volume Ed.) is the Inko variant available for volume purchasing.
  • Regular Price: $19.99 / €21.99
  • VPP Price: $9.99 / €10.99
  • Hardware: iPhone, iPad & Apple Pencil, Apple TV. Review the recommended hardware section below for more details.
  • Requirements: iOS 13 or later.

Prizmo (iPhone, iPad, Mac)

Prizmo is a scanning app with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in multiple languages that lets you scan and recognize text documents, business cards, and images with your device’s camera or using a scanner (Mac only). With Prizmo, you can create clean, multi-page PDF documents, JPEG/PNG scans, and vCard that can then be exported. Prizmo also provides text translation (Mac only), text-to-speech, and accessibility features.

  • Why is this app suited for classroom use?
    • Processing documents is a very common task at school or university. Scanning book pages for later review or archiving, importing text, reading text aloud, translating it from a different language, or creating nice looking scan of documents are all tasks that can be done with Prizmo.
    • Children or young adults with specific needs (dyslexia or autism) can, for example, use the app to scan and recognize the text and use text-to-speech to let the document be read aloud to them. Interactive word highlighting can help a lot to follow the text and to recognize words as they are being read.
    • OCR/Text recognition in several languages (see full list for Prizmo iOS & Prizmo Mac versions) which can be used in language class along with Prizmo’s translation feature.
    • Prizmo (iOS only) features a text reader where the text rendering can be fully customized by adjusting margins, line spacing, text size and fonts (OpenDyslexic font supported).
    • The text-to-speech feature, when the text is being read aloud by the reader (speech rate and voice can be modified), can be used by dyslexic children as it is possible to skim through the text by words or sentences while these are highlighted.
    • Possibility to recognize a document in a foreign language and hear it being read aloud, this can be useful for students who are learning the correct pronunciation of words.
    • The page flattening feature is particularly handy in the case of scanned books/magazines that need to be corrected before having the page recognized by Prizmo.
    • OCR editing and correction is useful when mistakes need to be corrected in the recognized text.
    • Real-time OCR results as moving/resizing a region frames immediately updates text results.
    • If you quickly need a text extract from a page that doesn’t support copy/pasting, Prizmo’s screen grabber (Mac only) can be used in this case avoiding then the hassle of retyping the extract or quote needed for e.g. homework or an essay.
    • Blind and low-vision users can also benefit from the app thanks to its native support of VoiceOver (can be fully controlled by touch/audio only) and Dynamic Type (text size can be increased throughout the app). Prizmo (iOS) also offers spoken guidance and scene description in order to make the best picture possible.

Prizmo Go is a text grabbing app that lets you quickly capture text with your device’s camera. Pre-captured images (PNG/JPEG) of text/documents can also be imported for recognition, and the app provides rich interactions with the recognized text. Moreover, Prizmo Go offers support for numerous features including text-to-speech, text translation and accessibility features.

  • Why is this app suited for classroom use?
    • Quickly copying/pasting text from a book or magazine for insertion in a homework is a common task. This removes the need of tedious retyping.
    • Simple interface, recognizes one text at a time. Makes it suitable in most situations.
    • OCR/Text recognition in several languages (see full list here).
    • Text-to-speech, when the text is being read aloud by the reader (speech rate and voice can be modified), can be used by dyslexic children as it is possible to skim through the text by words or sentences while these are highlighted.
    • Scanned text can be translated into English (or other languages). This makes it a great companion for language learning.
    • Possibility to recognize a document in a foreign language and hear it being read aloud, this can be useful for students who are learning the correct pronunciation of words.
    • Blind and low-vision users can benefit from the app thanks to its support of VoiceOver and Dynamic Type (for an increased text size). A special scene description button is also available to quickly know how many lines of the document are visible by Prizmo Go.

Hardware Recommendations.

Our apps are optimized for latest operating system (OS) version. Review each app above to determine compatibility with your devices / OS version. We give some recommendations below in case you are looking to purchase new devices for your institution.

Mac and iPad are standard equipment and can therefore serve many purposes in your educational institution. The iPad is especially easy to use from the start and a variety of apps can be installed on it for textbooks, note taking, homework assignment, collaborative work, etc.

Some time ago, Apple released their iPad 6th generation, and Logitech their Crayon compatible with this iPad, which were both unveiled during Apple’s Education event in Chicago and were specially made for classroom use. We recommend this iPad for all of our apps because it is powerful, a great value, and thanks to the Crayon (only available in the U.S.), future-proof to new education usage that relies on handwriting. Furthermore, Apple also offers hardware education pricing for schools and universities as well as an additional discount if devices are purchased by 10 packs, all of the prices shown below already take into account these discounts. Our app Inko is fully compatible and optimized for Apple Pencil and Logitech Crayon, taking advantage of their pressure (Apple only) & angle sensing, low latency and high precision capabilities.

Below you will find a basic class setup for 20 students and related costs according to the apps you wish to use in your institution.

  • If your educational institution already has Apple Devices (iPad, Mac)
