This is a submission for the 2024 Hacktoberfest Writing challenge: Maintainer Experience
This year, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in Hacktoberfest 2024 as a maintainer, sharing some of my open-source projects and collaborating with developers worldwide.
For those who might not know, Hacktoberfest is an annual month-long event that brings together the open-source community, fostering contributions from experienced developers and newcomers alike. It exemplifies the essence of open-source: collaboration, inclusivity, and community spirit.
And it鈥檚 about so much more than just code. In my view, open-source is a lifestyle鈥攐ne centered around learning, sharing, and growing together.
Open source is more than just code, is a lifestyle
This year, I was fortunate to be able to share three repositories with the community:
- Some Drops of PHP: A collaborative eBook in HTML format featuring insights into various PHP functions, contributed by developers of all skill levels.
- Some Drops of JavaScript: This initiative is similar to the above one but focused on JavaScript functions. It encourages contributors to share and discuss knowledge, approaches, and challenges about the language's functions.
- PHP Data Block: A PHP library designed to simplify data handling in applications.
Each of these projects became a hub for collaboration during Hacktoberfest, attracting enthusiastic developers keen to contribute, share knowledge, and improve the codebases together.
The Magic of Open-Source Collaboration
What continues to amaze me, year after year, is the passion and enthusiasm the open-source community brings to Hacktoberfest. This year was no different. I was in awe by the number of pull requests I received, the quality of contributions, and the thoughtful discussions about new features and enhancements.
It wasn鈥檛 just about adding code or fixing bugs鈥攊t was about sharing ideas, learning from each other, and contributing to something bigger than any one individual. Whether someone added a new PHP function to the eBook or optimized the PHP codebase, each contribution reflected the open-source spirit.
Why I Maintain: Open-Source as a Lifestyle
I鈥檝e always said that open-source is not just about code, it鈥檚 a lifestyle.
It鈥檚 a mindset that promotes continuous learning, sharing knowledge, and working together to build tools and solutions that benefit the entire community. Hacktoberfest is so special to me: it embodies these values perfectly.
Being a maintainer is more than overseeing projects. It鈥檚 about guiding contributors, fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment, and learning alongside others. Pull requests aren鈥檛 just code submissions鈥攖hey're moments of collaboration where we, as a community, push the boundaries of what鈥檚 possible.
The Power of the Open-Source Community
Hacktoberfest is a time when this community shines. Contributors proactively engage in discussions, offer constructive feedback, and take the initiative to improve things. Many of the pull requests I received brought fresh perspectives and creative solutions that I hadn鈥檛 even considered.
It's this spirit of mutual growth and collaboration that makes open-source so fulfilling. Seeing developers from all walks of life鈥攚hether they're just starting out or have years of experience鈥攃ome together with a shared purpose is truly inspiring.
Looking Forward
Participating in Hacktoberfest 2024 has been a rewarding and energizing experience, and it reaffirms my commitment to open-source. I鈥檓 incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the repositories and the broader community for their dedication and enthusiasm.
As this year's Hacktoberfest ends, I鈥檓 more motivated than ever to continue contributing, maintaining, and nurturing this incredible community. After all, open-source isn鈥檛 just about writing code鈥攊t鈥檚 about building something meaningful together. 馃實馃殌
Whether you're an experienced developer or just starting your journey, there's always a place for you in the open-source world. Hacktoberfest is just one way to get involved, but the opportunities to contribute, learn, and grow are endless.
Here鈥檚 to many more collaborative projects, insightful pull requests, and a future where open-source thrives!

Nice 馃敟 I end up reading about others contributing to Hacktoberfest rather than actually contributing myself lol.
