Redeeming an audiobook gift

My brother sent me two audiobooks for Christmas with codes to redeem them. When I went into the Apple Books app I went to my account and manually put in the code to redeem. It said it was successful and the download started immediately. Unfortunately when I went to open the file it said I had to pay the cost of the book to listen. Was there a step I missed? It should be paid for already.
