About Us

Welcome to the Society for the Prevention of Disorders of Aggression. Our organization was founded by an international consortium of scientists, clinicians, authors, parents, and people affected by disorders of aggression (including psychopathy, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and antisocial personality disorder). We aim to alleviate the suffering caused by disorders of aggression by improving public awareness of these disorders and working towards improved tools for identifying, treating, and preventing these disorders across the lifespan. We seek to address the needs of children and adults with disorders of aggression, as well as the needs and concerns of their families and communities, through education and advocacy; improving public understanding of the signs, symptoms, and causes of disorders of aggression; and offering screenings, resources, and guidance to clinicians, educators, caregivers, and those experiencing disorders of aggression.

2024 Award for Research on Disorders of Aggression Winner

In their research, which was awarded the 2024 Award for Research on Disorders of Aggression, Danique Smeijers, Erik Bulten, and Inti Brazil review the existing research on hostility bias, or the tendency to infer hostile motives and intentions in response to ambiguous social cues. They confirmed the strong relationship between hostility bias and aggressive behavior, supporting the importance of hostility bias as a risk factor in disorders of aggression.

They also developed a new computerized task that can assess the cognitive processes underlying hostility biases, a tool that is now in use by labs around the world. This research has the potential to help assess and understand risk for aggressive behavior and its underlying causes. Conduct Disorder
Screening Test

for Children Ages 17 and younger

Conduct disorder is a diagnosis that reflects severe, persistent antisocial behaviors that violate laws, rules, or others’ rights. This diagnosis is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) that psychologists and psychiatrists use. No standardized screening test for conduct disorder is publicly available. However, this screening tool inquires about known symptoms of conduct disorder. The resulting score can be used to estimate whether a child is at risk for conduct disorder.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

for Children Ages 17 and younger

Oppositional defiant disorder is a diagnosis that reflects persistent irritability, argumentativeness, defiance, and vindictiveness. This diagnosis is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) that psychologists and psychiatrists use. No standardized screening test for oppositional defiant disorder is publicly available. However, this screening tool inquires about known symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder. The resulting score can be used to estimate whether a child is at risk for this disorder.

Callous-Unemotional Traits
Screening Test

for Preschool Children Ages 2-5

Callous-unemotional traits are the core emotional and social risk factors for psychopathy. The Preschool Version of the ICU (Inventory of Callous Unemotional Traits), developed by Paul Frick and colleagues, can reliably assess these traits in children between the ages of 2 and 5 (psychopathic traits can emerge as early as 2 or 3 years of age).

No standardized screening test for antisocial personality disorder is publicly available. However, this screening tool inquires about known symptoms of antisocial personality disorder. The resulting score can be used to estimate whether an adult is at risk for antisocial personality disorder.

for Adults Ages 18+

Psychopathy reflects a combination of traits that include boldness, callousness, and impulsivity. The TriPM (Triarchic Psychopathy Model), developed by Chris Patrick and colleagues, can reliably assess these traits in adults ages 18 and older.
