The introduction of the euro – first as ‘book money’ in 1999 and later as physical notes and coins in 2002 – is one of the European Union’s crowning achievements.
Euro coins and banknotes are important symbols of European unity and commitment. For this reason there are clear rules on how and when their images can be used.
Regulation (EU) No 1214/2011 ensures that euro banknotes and coins can be easily and safely transported by road across national borders between Member States that have adopted the euro or are about to do so.
