I invite you to browse through these pages where I share with you my vision for Europe's Transport policy.

Transport is a crucial and dynamic sector of the European economy, it generates millions of jobs, provides for the delivery of our daily needs and takes us to our holiday destinations, among other things.

I recognise, however, that more still needs to be done.

That is why I want to promote transport which is competitive and of high quality, safe and sustainable. My two predecessors, to whom I pay tribute, took European transport policy forward in big strides. I shall do my best to maintain this impetus, while ensuring that commitments are met.

I am personally convinced that our societies can only tackle today's challenges by working on a European scale, particularly in transport sector, as a major feature of the internal market, free movement of our citizens and our goods. We must, therefore, strive to communicate our endeavours as effectively as possible, explain to all citizens the importance of transport policy and its effects on our lives.

This is why, as Commissioner, I will devote time and energy to being "close to the people" and to building up a closer relationship with citizens, NGOs and political actors.
