Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard will visit China from 23 to 26 April. Meetings during the trip will discuss developments in climate action in Europe and China, opportunities for EU-China cooperation and perspectives for the global climate agreement to be adopted at the UN climate conference in Paris in 2015. Commissioner Hedegaard will meet high-level Chinese public figures, such as Xu Shaoshi, the Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), Xie Zhenhua, the deputy chairman of the NDRC, and Li Baodong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. She will also meet with NGOs and give a guest lecture at the Tsinghua University. Commissioner Hedegaard will also visit the city of Zhenjiang in the Jiangsu Province, including a demonstration zone for low carbon development in industries, and the emissions trading pilot programme set up in Shanghai. The Shanghai ETS is one of the seven announced Chinese emissions trading pilots, which will eventually make up the second largest carbon market in the world after Europe's carbon market. The meetings will take stock of preparations for key events including the UN Climate Summit in September and the climate change conference in Lima, Peru, in December, both significant milestones on the road to achieving an international climate agreement in Paris in 2015.

Commissioner Hedegaard will start her US visit in New York where, among others, she will meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the former mayor of New York and current United Nations Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change Michael Bloomberg, as well as high level diplomats from developing countries. The second leg of the trip will take the Commissioner to Washington, D.C., where she will meet with US Special Envoy for Climate Change Todd Stern, Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs Caroline Atkinson, White House advisor John Podesta, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency Gina McCarthy, and Vice President of the World Bank Group Rachel Kyte. She will also meet with US NGOs and energy and environmental organisations.

Commissioner Hedegaard will be in New York from 22 to 27 September for a series of international and bilateral meetings. On 26 September she will host, together with Norway, an informal meeting on climate change for ministers from around the world. On 24 September Commissioner Hedegaard will participate in a meeting of the Major Economies Forum on energy and climate (MEF). The MEF, set up by President Obama to facilitate dialogue on climate change policy between key developed and developing countries, brings together ministers from 17 of the world's major economies which are collectively responsible for some 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a number of observer countries. The talks will cover key elements of the new international climate agreement due to be adopted in 2015, including how to encourage ambitious emission commitments; how the '2015 package' can advance other issues, such as climate finance; expectations for the UN climate change conference in November in Warsaw;  and possible cooperative 'MEF actions' to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Among other engagements during her visit, Commissioner Hedegaard will meet ministers from Peru, which will host next year's UN climate conference, Canada, Mexico, the Marshall Islands, Jamaica and Norway among others.

• European Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard will attend a climate event of the University of Copenhagen – entitled "Communicating the obvious". The event is part of the communication campaign A world you like. With a climate you like and will discuss how to incite Europeans to take personal action against climate change, with experts from communication and business. A string of examples will be presented from the housing, transport, food and waste sectors.

• Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard will travel to Paris on Thursday 29 August, where she will have meetings with Mr Philippe Martin, Minister for Ecology, Sustainable development and Energy and with Mr Nicolas Hulot, Special envoy of the President of the Republic for the Protection of the Planet.
