Euroscepticism has spread in the wake of the economic crisis, but it is worth remembering why Europe continues to matter, says John McCormick, a leading US expert on EU politics.
McCormick, the Jean Monnet chair of European Union politics at Indiana University, says it is often easier to identify with the EU’s critics than its supporters, but their arguments are often based on myths and misunderstandings.
The credit crunch has presented the EU with the biggest crisis in its history, but there is the opportunity for a greater understanding of how the EU works and the chance for the bloc to emerge stronger.
“It is time to shake off the gloom, to put the scepticism in context, to remember all the positives that the EU has brought us, and to work creatively at addressing its problems,” he wrote in a comment on EurActive.
