Strasbourg: Participation in the College meeting and meetings with MEPs, in the context of the plenary session of the European Parliament

Ireland: Commissioner gave a speech in the event focusing on the EU latest achievements in Animal Health; discussion with Health minister focused on alcohol and tobacco. Interviews with 3 Irish media focused on Animal Health issues, healthy nutrition.

Mission to Okayama, Japan for G20 Meeting of Health Ministers; Meeting with MHLW Minister Kato; Meeting with the Director General’s Envoy for Multilateral Affairs EU-WHO, Michèle Boccoz; Meeting with students and with Vice Presidents at Keio University, Tokyo; Interviews 17/10/2019 21/10/2019 Tokyo, Okayama

Context

The G20 Meeting of Health Ministers covered four topics: Universal Health Coverage (UHC), population ageing, health security and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). A simulation exercise on the public health emergency during mass gathering was also organised.

 

Meeting with Minister Kato Commissioner discussed Universal Health Coverage, Antimicrobial Resistance and following -up on measures on Fukushima and opening EU market to Japanese products, as well as cooperation on good manufacturing practices for pharmaceuticals.

 

Meeting with the Director General’s Envoy for Multilateral Affairs EU-WHO, Michèle Boccoz. The meeting focused on the cooperation on health. Commissioner assured of EU’s continued commitment to multilaterism and underlined the need of a proper implementation and follow up of the political commitments taken at international level. Ms Boccoz presented the new WHO Academy on Health and informed that WHO was resuming their cooperation with producers organisations on food safety.

Commissioner also delivered a speech and a discussion on the issues of health and food safety at Kaio university in Tokyo. Before leaving to Okayama, commissioner held an interview with Japanese media outlet Nikkei.

Mission to Luxembourg for participation in the AGRIFISH Council; Visit to DG Sante C Directorate 14/10/2019 15/10/2019 Luxembourg

Context

In the framework of the AGRI-FISH Council the following AOB were discussed: state of play of food safety in Europe, update on the situation concerning African Swine Fever, recent listeria outbreak. The visit to SANTE Directorate C was the occasion to make point on the progress made in the health area during this mandate

Commissioner gave a keynote presentation on the Commission’s initiatives and main gains on alcohol policy during the recent years, invited all Member States to cooperate closer and to speak with one voice in reducing alcohol consumption, implementing measures and reducing alcohol related harm in the EU

Mission to Bad Hofgastein for participation as a speaker in the European Health Forum Gastein; NGO round table session; Mentoring session with Young Forum Gasteiners 03/10/2019 05/10/2019 Bad Hofgastein

Context

NGO round table session –Commissioner participated in a meeting with  selected non-governmental organisations around three themes for discussion : the overall conference theme of disruption;  health priorities for the next Commission;  and mainly various questions raised by the NGO representatives.

Mentoring session with Young Gasteiners- informal discussion with young researchers and officials from Member States on public health and development of EU health policy.

Mentoring session with Young Gasteiners- meeting where Commissioner provided with career advice to a your Gasteiner.

European Health Forum Gastein- Commissioner attended the closing session where he focused mainly  on  the public health emergency represented by global climate crisis.

In the margins of the event, Commissioner also held a meeting with a dozen of journalists and gave a few one-to-one interviews.
