Over the past 2 years, the implementation of the EU Action Plan on the Digitalisation of the Energy System has been a key driver of the twin green and digital transitions in the EU energy sector. It outlines a strategic vision and actionable measures to digitalise energy.
Better access and exchange of energy data will help the relevant actors along the energy value chain to launch new and innovative services. This will promote energy market integration, support the decarbonisation of the energy system and strengthen its resilience.
The Smart Energy Expert Group (SEEG) has been launched recently to assist the Commission in the sustainable transformation of the energy system. This is a significant outcome of the action plan. The expert group includes 3 subgroups covering data for energy, consumer empowerment and protection and cybersecurity.
The subgroup Data for Energy (D4E) met for the first time in November 2024, first with a wider set of stakeholders to discuss the policy context, and then among its members. D4E will focus on developing and strengthening access to, sharing of, and (re-)use of energy-related data. Its priority areas include flexibility services for the energy markets and grids, smart and bi-directional charging of electric vehicles, and facilitating renovations for improving the energy efficiency of (smart) buildings, which are key to achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Digital Decade. Work to develop more detailed definitions for these priority areas, called 'high-level use cases', has started and the experts involved are making the most of the considerable knowledge already gathered from EU-funded research and innovation projects in order to achieve this, benefitting also from the sound policy framework.
Digitalisation will continue to be a focus of Commission policies for the energy sector. As outlined by President von der Leyen in her mission letter to the new Commissioner for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen, the EU will continue to 'leverage the potential of digital technologies' in the energy sector by developing a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and the use of AI in the Energy Sector. This highlights the need for a continued effort in the deployment of responsible and sustainable digital technologies and AI in the energy sector.
This new Strategic Roadmap will complement the upcoming Electrification Action Plan and, together, will contribute to the implementation of the Clean Industrial Deal and the Affordable Energy Action Plan.
