The importance that the new Commission College puts on EU citizens in the clean energy transition was a recurring theme at the latest Citizen’s Energy Forum in Budapest on 5 December.
Taking place in the first days of the new Commission’s mandate, the event provided the opportunity to kick-start work on developing the Citizens Energy Package which will provide a coherent approach to empower citizens and ensure a fair and inclusive energy transition.
The forum brought together representatives from the Commission, EU, national and local stakeholders, regulators and EU countries to discuss the outlines and substance of the Citizens’ Energy Package, announced by President von der Leyen in her Mission Letter to Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen. Discussions touched upon a range of relevant themes including energy communities, consumer choice, decarbonisation of residential heating, building renovations for households affected by energy poverty, the phase-out of coal, and the link to affordable housing, as outlined in the forum conclusions.
In her keynote speech, Deputy Director-General for Energy, Mechthild Wörsdörfer, underlined that the upcoming package will focus on a just transition, especially for the most vulnerable, but it will also intensify reskilling and training of workers.
In parallel with the forum, the 3rd Regulatory Roundtable on Energy Policy for Consumers engaged EU countries, regulators and stakeholders to exchange on the implementation of current EU rules (notably recently agreed Directives which now need to be transposed into national law), as well as on the key elements of the forthcoming Citizens Energy Package. The conclusions of the roundtable meeting are also available online.
