Out of the two places this is my preference. Dog is cooked perfectly and has a great snap as you bite. Chili is perfectly spicy. And for $2.50 awesomeness. (4 of 4 petals via Fondu) Read more
One of the two best places for coney dogs in Detroit (the dish started as a grab-and-go snack for auto workers). Watch this video for the best places to find chili in the U.S.: http://wxch.nl/1JGRTS8
I would have to say I'm a bigger fan of the American coney island. Ignore the other Greek dishes on the menu; the coney here is the real deal - lightly toasted bun sharp onions and a light beef chili
Esquire: ACI & Lafayette CI are next to each other dwtn, and theirs is a bitter and endless grudge match. Both raise a torch for true regional delight: coneys (hot dogs w/chili, mustard, &raw onion)
Serving up their own version of the Detroit coney dog, this diner has its own loyal following of die hard fans, and it is definitely 100% Detroit. [Eater 38 Member]
Great quick meal at a great price! It's a little more spacious and than its rival next door, and also has a little more variety, serving gyros in addition to their delicious coneys and loose burgers.
The Coney is really a tasty euro-style frankfurter with a delicious rich chili on top. The yellow mustard interferes with the flavor imo. The wings are fabulous!
The "Fancier" of the two Coney joints, my friend put it best:"The chili tastes like taco meat..."It is a bigger place, so if you have a group of people, this'll be better for at least that.

Unless you really like Mexican-style cheese on your dog, do not ask for cheese. I thought I was getting some sort of liquid cheese, and ended up with what looked like a taco. Good dog though.
American Coney is best for meeting friends, hanging out and watching street traffic through the big windows. Lafayette is better for purist singles or couples who want to savor the original Detroit at
Well, was talked into American over Lafayette. Big mistake. In my Gyro was a long hair that wasn't mine or the lady's. My girlfriend's "premium" hot dog was completely charred on one side. Avoid.
