The EU’s CT JUST Project has reached a significant milestone, completing its first forensic policing training cycle for Iraqi police. Culminating in a study visit to Spain, this initiative equips Iraqi forces with advanced skills aligned with international standards, strengthening their counterterrorism capabilities and fostering global security cooperation.

Why It Matters

Terrorism is a global challenge requiring collaborative solutions. CT JUST bolsters Iraq’s law enforcement and judicial systems to address complex crimes effectively. Agustín Fernández of FIIAPP emphasized, “Joint action across countries is essential to confront those who threaten global security."

Comprehensive Training Highlights

  • Madrid: Iraqi officers explored advanced forensic tools such as hyperspectral photography and 3D forensic mapping, crucial for preserving evidence and ensuring judicial validity.
  • Ávila: At the National Police Academy, participants observed specialised training integrating technical expertise and human rights education, essential for strategic counterterrorism efforts.
  • TEDAX Expertise: Practical demonstrations on explosive device neutralization showcased Spain’s capabilities in operational security and forensic investigations.

International Collaboration

The visit underscored the importance of partnerships in addressing transnational threats. Sharing knowledge on forensic policing strengthens the EU-Iraq relationship and promotes best practices in tackling terrorism and organised crime.

Impact and Next Steps

Since April 2024, CT JUST has delivered over 100 hours of training to Iraqi forces. This study visit marks the start of deeper cooperation, with upcoming initiatives in 2025 targeting cybercrime, environmental crimes, and crisis management. By investing in local capacities, CT JUST fosters resilience and builds a safer, more stable world.
