AT&T improves operations and employee experiences with Azure and AI technologies

AT&T's purpose is to create connection to friends, family, work, commerce, education, health, entertainment and more. To deliver on that purpose, the company is exploring how to use technology to help automate some business processes to improve employee and customer experiences. AT&T has started using Azure OpenAI Service to accelerate this automation so its employees can be more productive and provide customers with the service they expect. By using Azure and AI technologies, the company can automate IT tasks and provide employees with fast answers to basic human resource requests, leading to increased efficiency, improved work life, and reduced costs.

“We think there's a big upside potential for Azure OpenAI Service to help us improve employee experiences, enhance customer interactions, and drive more efficiency within our developer community.”

Jon Summers, Chief Information Officer, AT&T

In today's world, the ability to connect with friends, family, work, commerce, education, health, and entertainment is critical. To meet this need, AT&T is investing in growth initiatives to provide better connectivity, service, and value to its customers. The company is committed to making the internet accessible to all and aspire to be the best broadband provider in the United States.

To deliver on this commitment, AT&T is driving its business forward and finding ways to increase operational efficiency. AT&T is using Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service in a few different use cases:

  • To enable IT professionals to request resources like additional virtual machines when they are running out of storage or if they are having a computer problem.
  • To migrate legacy code into modern code, which will help accelerate developer’s productivity and let them to focus on creating more modern tools and experiences for AT&T customers and employees.
  • To empower employees to complete common human resources tasks, such as changing withholdings, adding a dependent to an insurance plan, or requisitioning a computer for a new hire. Employees can ask ChatGPT in Azure OpenAI Service a question or give it a command and the task is passed on to the appropriate person on the employee’s behalf.

By using these technologies, AT&T employees can stay focused on more complex, higher value tasks, like providing customers with the superior service they expect from AT&T. Jeremy Legg, AT&T Chief Technology Officer says, “Using Azure OpenAI Service to help automate some of these more common tasks will be an important change to the way we operate. There will be meaningful time and cost savings. It's still early days, but it’s exciting.”
