How to Deal with a Chronically Indecisive Boss

March 24, 2017

Summary.

It’s frustrating to have a manager who can’t make a decision. Without direction, you may not know what your boss expects of you or how to best push a project forward. Here are some strategies for coping. Build trust. Be a sounding board for your boss. Help him weigh the pros and cons of various actions. Ask sharp questions; provide relevant data; and offer your perspective. Take charge. Enable your boss to delegate to you. If you’re eager for her to make a strategy decision, say: “There are several ways to address this. Can I try one and report back with my progress?” Seek allies. Identify colleagues who have influence over your boss and ask their advice. Say, “I’m trying to figure out how to accomplish our team’s goals. Do you have ideas?” Protect yourself. An indecisive boss is bad for your internal reputation so it’s wise to cultivate mentors in other parts of the organization. You need people who have your back.

Managers who can’t seem to pick a course of action — or who constantly change their minds – can be maddening. You’re left spinning your wheels, or abruptly switching directions, and your team’s credibility across the organization is likely to suffer. So how can you help a wishy-washy boss make decisions? If your manager isn’t willing to steer, is it OK for you to take the driver’s seat?
