Life’s Work: An Interview with Darius Rucker

Jim Wright

Summary.

When the front man of Hootie & the Blowfish ditched pop music to make country records, he was taking a big risk. Nashville didn’t welcome crossover artists, and an African American hadn’t had a country hit in years. In this interview Rucker describes why he prevailed, how he’s dealt with racism, and what still gets him excited.

As the front man for the pop band Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker turned a college hobby into a chart-topping music career. Soon, though, his southern upbringing and soulful voice led him to a solo career in country, where he found equal success, becoming the genre’s most prominent Black artist for many years. His new memoir, Life’s Too Short, is out now.
