Description

3DMark Sling Shot is an app for older iPhones and iPads. Download 3DMark Wild Life to benchmark the latest models.

3DMark benchmarks help you test and compare the performance of smartphones and tablets. Each 3DMark benchmark app is designed for a specific class of hardware. The 3DMark Sling Shot app was first released in 2015 and is now recommended only for older iPhone and iPad models.

Use the Sling Shot benchmark to test and compare low-cost smartphones and tablets. Sling Shot is an OpenGL ES 3.0 benchmark with a 1920 × 1080 rendering resolution.

Sling Shot Extreme is a more demanding benchmark for mainstream smartphones and tablets. It uses Apple's Metal API and has a 2560 × 1440 rendering resolution.

DEVELOPER RESPONSE REQUIRED

When will you update your apps? They are at least 2 years out-of-date, this making them incapable of accurately gauging performance of the latest iPhones and iPads according to current testing standards. It actually can’t even properly identify any iPhones more recent than the iPhone 7, and I’m using the iPhone XS Max 256 GB. When will you update these apps and make them current?

If there is no response from the developer a formal request will be made to Apple to have this app pulled since it is confirmed even by Apple’s Technical Support as NOT being compatible with the latest versions of iOS or iPhones (crashes, devices freezes, kernel panics, random device reboots, etc.).

Developer Response ,

Sorry that it took us a while to update the 3DMark Sling Shot app. However, we'd like to let you know that we've released an update for 3DMark Sling Shot app that improved compatibility with the latest models and iOS 14. We've also released 3DMark Wild Life, our new cross-platform benchmark https://apps.apple.com/app/3dmark-wild-life-benchmark/id1512372293?ls=1 We hope you can give it a try.

It works

But I don't have a very good contextual indication from the app, what my score really means, and where I stand compared to other devices.

I got a phone call while it was testing, and when I came back, I guess it had continued running off screen, resulting in an artificially high score. It told me my 2200 score was excellent for an iPhone 7+. I tested again, without the call, and got about 1800.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your feedback. We would have replied sooner, but Apple only recently enabled this feature. Even though you posted your review some time ago, we'd still like to help if we can.

We heard from several people who reported problems like yours, but their problems disappeared after Apple released iOS 10.0.3. It seems that there may have been some compatibility issues in the earlier versions of iOS 10.

To solve your problem, update your device to the latest version of iOS 10, then try running 3DMark again. You can reply by editing your review if you run into any other issues with our app.

Futuremark debunked IOS performance throttling “once and for all” before Apple admitted to it

Can you really trust any numbers from developers who claims to have debunked Apple’s performance throttling on older phones “once and for all” on October of 2017, when Apple admitted to performance throttling in December of 2017, - and now faces more than 30 class action lawsuits for throttling performance? how embarrassing.

Futuremark benchmark scores are about as trustworthy as Volkswagen’s MPG claims.

EDIT:
Developers have provided a response. After updating the battery on my old iphone 6 plus, i could confirm performance was on par with average benchmark data. i cannot fault the software or its benchmark or its numbers. only the inaccurate conclusion drawn from the data in the article... updated rating on the app.

Developer Response ,

As you say, Apple has admitted to slowing down devices that have degraded batteries.

Our report was based on more than 100,000 benchmark results from iPhone owners around the world. We didn't select or test devices ourselves.

Unfortunately, we have no way of knowing how many of those results came from devices with degraded batteries. But we can see that they had little effect on the average benchmark scores, which are consistent across iOS versions.

A closer look at the distribution of scores does show small numbers of under-performing devices. This is normal for every mobile device. Some of those lower-than-average scores might be a result of Apple's fix. But they are just as likely to have come from devices that were too hot or had other apps active in the background while the benchmark was running.

In any case, it is still a fact that the CPU in an old iPhone with the latest iOS and a good battery can perform to the same level today as it did when new. This is backed up by users who said that the performance of their device returned to normal after replacing the degraded battery.
