Albert “Big Gil” Gilbert Albert “Big Gil” Gilbert is from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He played on the varsity football team from 1946 to 1950.
He was outstanding in the position for his ability to block and to open holes on offense. He was immovable on defense…and all-around athlete. “Big Gil” was made co-captain of the team in 1949 because of his dedication and determination. He was selected to the second All-CIAA team.
“Big Gil” was an outstanding wrestler for three years in the heavy-weight division.
“Big Gil” is employed by the Continental Can Company and was this company’s first black plant manager. He has served on the East Cleveland School Board for four years; is a member of the National Black School Board Members, the National Safety Council, the Citizens League of Greater Cleveland, and he Ohio Manufacturers Association.
“Big Gil” serves as an elder in the Presbyterian Church in his home of Cleveland and as a Boy Scout Maser. He is also a 32nd degree mason.
