Carl was born in Durham, North Carolina and heĀ attended Hillside High School. He came to Morgan College in 1949 as a promising all-around athlete.

"Jet," as he was appropriately nicknamed , immediately demostrated his talents in football, basketball and track Ā He won letters in all three sports.

He became captain of the basketball team and received honorable mention selection in the C.I.A.A conference.Ā 

Carl was the flashiest floor man and sizzled on the fast break. He was one of the top backcourt men in the C.I.A.A., with blinding speed and great hands .

"Jet" was a first-rate ball handler, who liked to steal passes and take charge fellow in th backcourt. A prolific scorer was "Mr. Hustle" and a crowd-pleasing ball hawk.Ā 

Carl served in the Army and was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant.

He worked as a supervisor with the Department of Recreation in Baltimore City.Ā
