Hall of Fame
Rev. Dr. Darrell Coulter, a native of Charleston, SC, entered Morgan State University in 1979. He received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1984. Rev. Coulter was a 5’9, 165 pound passing dynamo and wasted no time cementing his name into Golden Bear athletic history. By the end of his career, he had rewritten the record book for quarterbacks in the storied Morgan State University football program, holding the records for most pass attempts (601), pass completions (277), passing yardage (4,131) and passing touchdowns (25).
Â
During his Morgan State University football career, Rev. Coulter was a four year starter and was named a team captain his freshman season. He did not disappoint his senior laden team, leading them to the 1979 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship. As a testament to his consistent play during that 10 game season, Rev. Coulter was recognized as the MEAC Player of the Week seven times and as the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week five times.
Â
In addition, he would go on to win numerous individual honors including being named to the 1979 All-MEAC First Team as quarterback and becoming the first Morgan State University football player to win the MEAC Offensive Player of the Year Award. His school record of four touchdowns in a single game, set against South Carolina State University, has been tied but not broken to date. Rev. Coulter capped his outstanding freshman season by being selected as the 1979 ECAC Rookie of the Year and as an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention selection.
Â
Rev. Coulter continued his outstanding play for Morgan State after his freshman season, going on to be named a Sheridan All-American for both the 1980 and 1981 seasons. He ended his sophomore season setting the single-season records for pass attempts (241), pass completions (128) and passing yardage (1,761). During his senior season, Rev. Coulter would set the school record for the longest completed pass (96 yards) against Cheney State College, breaking the previous record he set in 1980 against the University of Delaware (95 yards). Â Over twenty-five years after his last game, Rev. Coulter still ranks fifth all-time in passing yardage (4,131).
Â
After the completion of his collegiate studies at Morgan State University, Rev. Coulter continued his educational pursuits obtaining Bachelor of Theology and Master of Theology degrees from the Philadelphia Bible College. He is the founder and pastor of Joy Baptist Church in Charleston, SC, where he has faithfully served for the last thirteen years. Today, Rev. Coulter continues to make significant contributions to his community through a myriad of civic and philanthropic activities such as motivational speaking, serving as a spiritual advisor to coaches and youth athletes, and serving as a foster parent. He and his wife of 23 years, Lisa, are the proud parents to three daughters.
