Denikwa “Dee Dee” Shelby was a two sport, four-year letterwinner on the Morgan State volleyball and women’s basketball teams from 1989-93. During her junior season as a member of Morgan State’s volleyball team, Shelby helped the Lady Bears make history in 1992, as the team captured the programs first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship, following a 3-1 win over Florida A&M on November 7, 1992. That same year, she was added to the MEAC All- Tournament Team.
During her tenure at Morgan, Dee Dee accomplished the following accolades: First MEAC Champion at Morgan State Univ. (1992), All MEAC 1st Team (1992), All MEAC 2nd Team (1993), Athletic Director’s Achievement Award (1993), The Earl C. Banks Athlete of the Year Award (1991),
and MVP—Volleyball (1991). She was originator of the chant Ooohhh Aaayyy!!!
Since graduating from Morgan State University, Denikwa “Dee Dee” Shelby earned a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Goucher College. She currently works as a teacher in Baltimore County and is the head varsity volleyball and basketball coach at Franklin High School. Currently her son, Tory James is the drum major for the Magnificent Marching Band of Morgan State University for the last two years.
