George Phillip “Phil” Hubbard matriculated to Morgan State University in 1967 and immediately became part of a dynamic swimming duo with his older brother Paul Hubbard. Lettering in swimming for four straight years, Hubbard became one of only two Morgan swimmers to be major contributors on three consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Swimming and Diving Championship teams, sharing the distinct honor with Mr. Ronald Cloud.

During the 1968 CIAA championships, Hubbard began his career by making important point contributions to help Morgan claim the championship placing third in three different events: the 400 yard freestyle relay, 1650 yard freestyle and the 800 yard freestyle relay.  During the 1969 championships, he swam a leg on the CIAA record setting 800 yard freestyle relay (8:36.2) and the second place 400 yard relay teams. Hubbard also excelled in his individual events, placing second in the 500 yd and 1650 yd freestyle races behind his brother Paul Hubbard.

In 1970, Hubbard helped Morgan sweep the first two places in both the 200 yard and 1650 freestyle at the CIAA Swimming and Diving Championships finishing second behind team captain Paul Hubbard. He rounded out his performance by helping Morgan to claim two medals in the 500 yard freestyle by placing third.

During the 1971 CIAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Hubbard won first place in the 500 yard and the 1650 yard freestyle races, helping to cement Morgan’s dominance in those events. In addition to those races, he also swam a leg on the winning 400 yard freestyle relay. In recognition of his outstanding performance, Hubbard was voted by the CIAA coaches as the 1971 Outstanding Swimmer at the championship meet.

George Hubbard and his brother Paul are the only two brothers to be on two consecutive championship CIAA swimming and diving teams from Morgan. George currently resides in Boston, MA, where he owns and operates a home improvement  business.
