Harry Gross is a native Baltimorean. He graduated from Douglass High School. During high school, at the annual South Atlantic High School Track and Field Championships, "Buddy" Gross won the broad jump, captured the 880, and the mile run. He also anchored his medley relay team to a second place finish.
Gross entered Morgan in 1944 and instantly became a standout in Intercollegiate Track & Field. In 1945Â he was the C.I.A.A. jalf-mile champ, mile champ and cross country champ. The Y.M.C.A. 12th Street cross country record holder and the S.A.A.A. half-mile champ. In 1947 he repeated as the C.I.A.A. half-mile champ.
In national competition, (the second Morgan athlete to compete in a national track meet - "Pepper" Harris being the first) Gross was a member of the Class Mile Relay team that took first place in the 1945 Penn Relays. In 1947, his team finished first in the Penn Relay Class B Mile Relay. In 1949, he was on the first place Class Mile Relay team at the Penn Relays.
As an international competitor, while in the Army, Gross was half-mile champion and record holder, took second place in the quarter mile and the broad jump. In 1946 at Berlin, Germany competing in the 12 nation G.I. Olympics, Harry finished fifth in the half-mile. In the International Cross Country Championship at London, England, he was fifteenth.
