Herbert Washington was born January 30, 1934 in Washington, D.C. He attended Armstrong Technical High School and entered Morgan in 1952. While at Morgan from 1952 to 1953, Herb was clocked the fastest freshman in 440 yards. He was a member of the college freshman mile relay team at the Penn Relays and Seton Hall meet. He anchored the mile relay championship team at the So. Atlantic indoor meet, the Evening star indoor meet (where a new meet record was set) and was a member of the championship team- C.I.A.A.
In 1954, Herb was the 660 yard South Atlantic indoor champ and a member of the 880 yard championship team at the Randall Island relays. In 1956, he was 600 yard indoor champ at the South Atlantic meet, 440 yard C.I.A.A. champ, set recorded in the NAIA for 440 yards, anchored the C.I.A.A. mile relay championship team.
Herbert interrupted his matriculation at Morgan to enter the service. In 1958, he was the 4th Army 440 yard champ and won 2nd place in the 440 on the 1959 All-Service Team. He returned to Morgan in 1960, graduation in 1961.Â
