Herman Lavern “Bitsy” Wade Herman Wade was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from the South Hills high school in Pittsburg and entered Morgan in 1951.

“Bitsy” participated in varsity track while at Morgan. He was lead-off man for the “Flying Four” relay team in 1953, ’54 and ’55. He was one of the national AAU champs in ’54 and ’55 at the Milrose games in Madison Square Garden. In 1953 ’54 and ’55, he was CIAA champion and won awards from the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Washington Star. He competed in the 220, the hurdles and the high jump. “Bitsy” lost only one race in 3 years of national competition and earned many lesser individual awards in and around Maryland.

While at Morgan, Herman was on the Dean’s List and became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. His graduate work was done at North Carolina State Fayetteville State University. He retired from the United States Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, after serving 20 years. During his tour of duty he received 3 bronze stars, the Army commendation medal, and the Vietnamese Ranger citation.
