Hosea Smith was born on October 2, 1937 in Georgia. He is a graduate of Lincoln High School located in Jersey City, New Jersey. 
   
Upon entering Morgan in January of 1957, he was selected captain of the freshman track team. He was a member of the freshman mile relay team that won the Penn Relay championship in 1957. In 1958, he became the AAU 300 yard dash championship. While on campus, he was  a member of the Future Teachers of America Club and served as president of that organization. He was also an active member of the health and Physical Education Majors Club.

Hosea graduated from Morgan in June of 1961. He earned a Masters degree in Administration and Supervision from Seton Hall University in south Orange, New Jersey. His professional accolades include: being chosen 1933 Distinguished Educator by the City-wide Parents Council of Jersey City, being selected as Track and Field Coach of the Year in 1969 and 1972, having served as president of the Black Educators for Jersey City, induction into the Hudson County Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame and membership in the New Jersey ICA Track Coaches Hall of fame, to name a few.

Currently, he is a teacher of Health and Physical Education at Public School #15 in Jersey City, New Jersey and served for 23 years as track coach at Ferris High School.
