James Hughes (Deceased) was a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina and graduated from Carver High School of that city in June 1951. He matriculated at Morgan State College on September 1, 1951 and graduated in June 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
 
After finishing Morgan, James was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry. He spent eighteen months in Korea as a member of the United Nations Peace Force and was honorably discharged in May 1957.

While at Morgan, James lettered as a member of the 1953 Boxing Team. He was also very proud to have been a member of the ROTC Rifle Team that received the first Varsity letters at Morgan from Coach Talmadge Hill during a drill ceremony at Hughes Stadium in 1953.
    
He was employed by the Baltimore City Public Schools in 1961 and has spent 32 years as a teacher in that system. He received his Master's degree from Coppin State College in Adult Education in 1981.
    
James was a dedicated member of the Morgan Varsity "M" Club ever since he discovered that it existed. He also served as Recording Secretary and a member of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
