Hall of Fame
Born June 5, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland, "Flaky" graduated from Walbrook Senior High School. In 1974, he entered Morgan State University where he excelled in football and lacrosse.
In football, he was selected All-State four times (1975-78), All-Conference MEAC (1976-78), Defensive M.V.P. in the 1977 New York Classic Morgan vs. Grambling, team M.V.P. in 1977, broke the school interception record, previously held by Mark Washington (record still holds), Junior Class Athlete of the Year, selected All-American by Kodak, U.S. Press and the Pittsburgh Courier, earned four varsity letters and served as captain of the team.
In lacrosse, Joe was captain of the team, earned four varsity letters, was team M.V.P. three times, led the team in scoring (1976-78), and was ground ball champ for four consecutive years. He was selected All-State four times, NCAA All-American three times and was the first and only Black in history to lead the nation in scoring (1977) and was the first and only Black to be on the cover of the NCAA Lacrosse Guide in its 102 year history.
"Flaky" also found time to participate in the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, was a worker at the Student Union and served as NYSP. He was on the Dean's List from 1975-77.
Fowlkes was head coach at Lombard Middle School and assistant coach in football and lacrosse at Forest Park High School. He has won four city championships, six conference city championships, five national flag football championship titles, and four senior pro football championships.
Joe is married to his wonderful wife, Angela, and they have been blessed with five children, Joseph Y. Fowkles, III., Jazzmen, Shira, Stephen and Stephon.
