Kelsey “Swifty” Brown , a native of Newark, New Jersey, spent his high school days at Barringer High. He entered Morgan as a chemistry major on an athletic scholarship. His college career was interrupted by a stint in the army.
The impressive running style that distinguished “Swifty” in high school remained with him in college. At Morgan he reigned as South Atlantic Champion from 1948-50, recording a 4:22 mile and a 9:24 two miles. Other achievements include a New Jersey AAU mile championship (4:29) in 1949 and the New Jersey AAU Cross Country title in 1951. “Swifty” considers his best race ever to be a 3:56.7 1500 meters in the 1950 AAU Junior Nationals.
After a 7 year lay-off (due to a back injury) Kelsey returned to active track training in 1975, running with the New Jersey Central Track Club. Some of his more recent accomplishments include National AAU Masters Indoor and Outdoor 1 mile championship- 1978, 3 hours and 6 minutes to finish the New York marathon in 1977, 1st place in the New Jersey AAU 880 and 1 mile runs- 1977, and 1st place in the 1977 New Jersey AAU 1000 yard run- indoor.
His civic affairs include being he president of a young adult group in the Methodist church; YM & YWCA youth group advisor, member and treasurer of the Green Township Community Choir, vice-president of the Jersey Senior Track Club and the 1978 New Jersey AAU Masters chairman. Kelsey is married and the father of three children. He worked as a chemical engineer at the Ashland Chemical Corporation in Great Meadows, New Jersey.
