Laura was born in Dayton,Ohio. She graduated from Roosevelt High School and entered Morgan College in 1934.
Laura Played and excelled in every sport made available to women at Morgan. She was a super basketball player and captain of the tem . She was also intramural champion in tennis and ping-pong.
Her campus activities included membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Pi Lambda Psi Honor Society, Dramatic Club, Y.W.C.A., Women's League , and the Pan-Hellenic Council.
She sang with the Women's Sextette of the Choral Club and was the winner in Baldwin and Omega Oratorical contests.

In 1938, Laura was May Queen at her alma mater and earned a citation in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She attended Columbia University in pursuit of a degree in counseling.
After the death of her husband, she assumed the position of manager and co-owner of the Jones Brothers Funeral Home in Dayton,Ohio.Â
