Leroy Kelly is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was captain of his high school team and won honorable mention on the Pennsylvania All Star Team and was voted the most outstanding athlete in his high school graduating class. Kelly also won honors in baseball and was a star on his high school basketball team. Kelly enrolled in Morgan as a Physical Education major. 

In 1962, when the Bears won the CIAA Championship, Kelly led the team in rushing, scoring and punting. in 1963, Kelly was selected by the press as Morgan's most valuable player in the Orange Blossom Game. During the season in 1963, he averaged better than 5 yards a carry for Morgan and was the third leading rusher.
  
When Kelly was signed by the Cleveland Browns, Morgan's Coach Earl "Tiger" Banks said Leroy is one of the finest backs I have ever coached. He has everything it takes to be Morgan's next pro. 
    
Leroy Kelly was one of the hottest players in the National Football League, in 1966. At 6 feet and 200lbs., he was called upon to fill the shoes of Jimmy Brown, Undoubtedly the greatest football player in modern history.
  
On June 3, 1966 at Menasha, Wisconsin, Leroy Kelly of the Cleveland Browns was inducted into the National 1000 Yard club, the organization for National Football League ground gainers who have rushed more than 1000 yards in a season. In his third year, he compiled a total of 1,239 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns and notched 120 points.
  
Leroy Kelly still holds three Morgan State Football records. His three touchdowns in one half against Delaware State in 1963, the longest scoring play from scrimmage of 95 yards against Virginia State in 1962 and punt return of 67 yards against Delaware State in 1962, still stands.
  
As a member of the Cleveland Browns Professional Football Team, he rushed for a career total of 7,274 yards which ranks him 5th in the record books of the National Football League.
