McKinley Crews was born November 5, 1934 in Durham, N.C. He graduated from Bound Brook High School located in Bound Brook, N.J. and entered Morgan State in 1953.

While attending Morgan, McKinley ran Cross Country and indoor and outdoor track. His accomplishments include being the number one or two runner on the Cross Country team that lost only one meet from 1954 to 1957. 

In 1954, he placed second in the 2 mile run and ran on the 2 mile relay championship team at the South Atlantic championships. He placed second in the 1 mile run at the South Atlantic indoor championships in 1955 and 2nd in the 2 mile run. 

In 1955, he won the C.I.A.A. 880 yard run outdoors and placed 2nd in the 2 mile run at the C.I.A.A. championships. in 1955-56, McKinley placed 3rd int the 1 mile run and ran on the winning 2 mile relay team at the South Atlantic Indoor championships. Won the outdoor C.I.A.A 1 mile run at the championships. 

In 1956-57, he was the runner-up in the South Atlantic 2 mile run (indoor) and ran in the 2 mile (outdoor) relay team that placed 2nd in the Penn Relays and was runner-up in both the mile and 2 mile at the C.I.A.A. Championships.
