Monique Liddell, a native of Sacramento, California, played high school basketball at Hiram Johnson High School, where she garnered All-State and All-Conference honors while also being named as her league’s most valuable player (MVP) during her senior season. She arrived at Morgan State University in 1997 and wasted no time adding her name into Lady Bear history, finishing her career among the program’s all-time leaders for scoring, rebounds and steals.
Â
After leading the team in both scoring and rebounds during her freshman season, Mrs. Liddell was named a First-Team All-Rookie selection and Second-Team All-MEAC selection in 1997. In recognition of her outstanding performance on the court, she was also selected as one of the few HBCU college players to participate with the Europe touring college All-Star team sponsored by People-to-People International in the Spring of 1997. She earned the reputation as one of the conference’s most consistent players after leading the Lady Bears in scoring and rebounds again in both her sophomore and junior seasons, earning Second-Team All-MEAC selections in 1998 and 1999.
Â
During her senior season, Mrs. Liddell became just the eighth Lady Bear to score 1,000 points. She also matched the program’s fourth highest single game scoring total when she totaled 32 points against University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) on January 15, 2000. In recognition of her accomplishments, Mrs. Liddell was First-Team All-MEAC selection and was selected as the Morgan State Female Athlete of the Year. She finished her career ranked as the program’s second all-time leading career scorer (1,420 points), third all-time leader in career steals (208) and fourth all-time leading career rebounder (808).
