He entered Morgan State University in 1971 and ended his career holding the school records for rushing yards (2,548) and rushing attempts (590), both records that would stand for more than 25 years before being broken.
Arguably one of the top five running backs to ever wear a Morgan State University uniform, Mr. Hammond was a First-Team All-MEAC running back selection in 1972, 1973, and 1974. In 1973, he set a school record in single game rushing when he scored two touchdowns and gained 201 yards against North Carolina A&T University, a record which stood until 2002. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was recognized by the 1973 Outstanding College Athletes of America and was named a 1975 Black College All-American.
Mr. Hammond continued his football career after Morgan, playing in the National Football League for five seasons. In his four seasons with the New York Giants, he was named team Most Valuable Player (1977) and received the 34th Yonkers Safari Honors-Giant of the Year award (1978). He finished his NFL career in 1980 after two seasons with the Washington Redskins. His football knowledge was exceptional and was recognized when he became an Assistant Coach with the Philadelphia Eagles beginning a coaching career that led to him becoming the head coach of the London Monarchs of the World Football League in 1995.
Since his professional football career as both a player and coach, Mr. Hammond has achieved additional success off the playing field, earning a Bachelor of Professional Studies in 2001 and a MBA from American Intercontinental University in 2007. He currently resides in Burlington County, NJ, where he serves as an Adjunct Professor of Business at the Camden County College and active in his community mentoring and youth development programs.
