Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland the late Robert Burkett attended Morgan in 1931 and graduated in 1934.
Bob was an honor student. He was a hard working, dedicated football player of the 1930 era. Bob played right tackle and was a member of the 1932-33 All-CIAA team.
During his playing days in Morgan, Bob played in only two losing games from 1931-333, out of a total of 24 games. He was an excellent blocker and pass protector. He played offense and defensive tackle. Bob was noted for his quickness, speed, and mobility. His skill as a Diagnostician was almost unbelievable.
Bob was one of the quickest defensive players in the college’s history. He smeared ball players tracks, splattered running attacks, seldom mouse-trapped, had amazing ability, and was very tough to block. He was tabbed as one of Morgan’s fiercest pass rushers and forever a standout even when the chips were down.
Bob was also a regular on one of Morgan’s Great Track Teams in 1933, which won the CIAA championship. He was a member of the campus Y.M.C.A. , Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Scientific Honor Society and Captain elect of the football team.
After graduating from Morgan, Bob went on to become a lawyer. He received the Gold Football Award, was a member of the “M” Club, and an Alumni Representative to Morgan’s Board of Trustees (1950’s) of Morgan College.
Robert Burkett was married to Grace Woolridge (class of 1937). From this union came daughter, Mrs. June Burkett Chapman, a graduate of Morgan, and a son Robert M. Burkett Jr.
