Stewart Alexander Brooks, Sr. was born in Washington, D.C. and attended elementary and junior high school there before moving on to St. Emma Industrial and Agricultural Institute in Rock Castle, VA.

He was awarded an athletic scholarship to Virginia State College where he studied for one year before returning to Washington, D.C. and Howard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education. He received his masters degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts.

Stu Began a career at Morgan that spanned 30 years, starting as an assistant professor in Physical Education department and as assistant track coach to Eddie Hurt. Testament to his concern for academic excellence and character development is that every member (over 200) of his swimming teams received a college degree from Morgan.

Brooks was the first swimming coach at Morgan. He had the unique ability to take young men with raw talent and mold them into cohesive swim team. His first C.I.A.A. championship came in 1955 and his second in 1957. He also coached several outstanding All-C.I.A.A. athletes that include Cecil Cooper, Landis Lee, William Brown, Reginald Holt (twice) and John Turner. Many of his athletes are now noted physicians, dentist, scholars, publishers , corporate executives, and public and private business men.

In 1965, Brooks accepted an appointment to the administrative staff as assistant to the president of the university. He served in this capacity until his retirement.
