A native Baltimorean," Walt" attended the Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School where he was a premier Maryland High School distance runner, undefeated in cross country competition. He entered Morgan in 1956. He held memberships in R.O.T.C, the Science Club, Future Teachers of America, The Student Government Association, Varsity Track and Varsity cross country. " Walt" was an R.O.T.C. patrol leader in 1957 and was on the deans list in 1960 and 1961. He graduated in 1961 with a B.S Degree in Science.
While at Morgan, he was the number two man on two C.I.A.A cross county championship teams 1957 and 1958. He competed in the mile runs on two C.I.A.A by track and field news in 1958 and 1959 and garnered 3rd place medals in the C.I.A.A Mile Run Championships of '58 and '59.
Some of his post graduate activities include memberships in the Varsity "M" Club, The Maryland Academy of Sciences, Beta Sigma Tau Fraternity, National Science Teachers Association, Baltimore Coaches Association, Morgan Alumni Association and the National Board of Realtors. Walt is also a boy Scout leader and a church Lay leader. He is currently department Head of Science at Carver Vocational-Technical High School here in Baltimore.
Coach Cole has become a living legend, as his runners at Carver High have broken a total of 22 course records and set 7 MSA track and field records. Walt always trains with his distance runners and competes at the master's level. His latest victory came in July, 1981 setting a course record at Brooklyn Park (40-44 age group).
Currently resides in Randallstown, Maryland.
