Willard Sylvester Jones Willard Jones was nicknamed “The Toe” by his teammates for his deadly accuracy in scoring field goals and extra points.
“The Toe” still holds the record for most extra points scored by a Morganite.
Willard is called “Tiger” by his friends. He is a native of Wilmington, Delaware. He attended Howard High School and enrolled in Morgan in 1943 and graduated in 1947.
“The Toe” was an affable student who was elected Senior Class President and President of the Student Government Association. In addition, he was a member of the Dramatics and Glee Clubs.
A gifted athlete, Willard was as equally effective in basketball as he was in football. He was considered the sixth man on Morgan’s basketball team, where he excelled as a guard and as a shooter. As a guard, he was respected for his ability to control the ball and his quickness. He was a member of Morgan’s 1944 and 1945 championship basketball teams.
As co-captain of the football team, “The Toe” was a gifted leader who inspired his teammates to win because of his determination to win and his love for the game. He was a fierce competitor.
Willard’s post-graduate credentials include the following: Chairman of the Department of Physical Education and Health at Delaware State; Vice Principal of the Warner Junior High School; Vice Principal of the Bancroft Middle School, Wilmington, Delaware; and currently Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education and recreation at Morgan State University. He is also an assistant to the Chairman of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department.
Willard is an active member of the “M” Club, member and Vice President of the Wilmington Chapter of the Morgan Alumni Association, the Alpha Phi Alpha-Fraternity, and a host of other organizations. Willard is married and the proud father of four children.
Currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
