"Bill" Lyght was one of the finest guards in Morgan football history. He played stellar ball on offense and defense. "Bill" was particularly effective as a blocker and a sure-fire tackler. He inspired his teamates to the ninth degree. His motta was LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR- but your opponent is your opposing offense was reluctant to run plays at him. He loved contact and dispelled great physical punishment to ball carriers. "Bill" was a member of Morgan's first team to win a major football game in 1928. His team defeated Lincoln University and tied Howard University. These two teams represented the Black Football Thanksgiving Day Classic in those days.
"Bill" Lyght was a native of Cambridge, Maryland where he attended Princess Anne Academy. He attended Morgan State College from 1926-1930. He played football for four years as first string left guard and won All-American Honors. In addition to his athletic activities, "Bill" was a member of the Student Government. He also became a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
After leaving Morgan, "Bill" Lyght earned his Bachelor of Divinity Degree from Drew University in 1933. He served pastorates in Princess Anne, Maryland, St. Daniels, in Chester, Pennsylvania, Asbury, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware.
Reverend Lyght was married to Attrue V. Lyght for over 40 years. They had four children, al whom attended and graduated from Morgan State University.
