Woodrow “Woody” Williams was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended and graduated from Glassboro High School in Glassboro, New Jersey.

“Woody” came to Morgan State College in 1960 and graduated in 1964.

Coach William H. Brown, who was interim coach while Stewart A. Brooks was on sabbatical leave, discovered “Woody” in a physical education swimming class and invited him to try out for the varsity swimming team. With no previous competitive swimming experience, “Woody” did quite well for himself thereafter.

In his freshman year, he won the CIAA 50 year freestyle championship, and was also a member of Morgan State’s CIAA. Diving and Swimming Championship Team for 1960-61.

“Woody” dominated the short sprint distance except in his sophomore year and the CIAA 50 Yard Freestyle Championships during the 1962-63 and 1963-64 seasons. His junior and senior years, respectively, were some of his greatest contributions to the swimming team. The Medley Relay was anchored by “Woody”, who also won the CIAA Championships finals for 100 Yard Freestyle four years in a row.

In his senior year, he was elected captain of the swimming team. To top off his illustrious swimming career, “Woody” was voted the Most Outstanding CIAA Swimmer’s Award in 1964.

Coaches William “Billy” Brown and Stewart “Stew” Brooks had glowing praises for “Woody”.

He was considered to be a team person who could be counted on to give his best and strength to the relay teams; a top sprinter in the CIAA Conference who did a yeoman’s job for Morgan. “Woody” could always be relied on.
