Men’s Tennis Suffers 6-1 Setback in Non-Conference Action against the Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. (April 4, 2024) — Morgan State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against the University of Delaware on Wednesday morning in non-conference action at the DFH Outdoor Courts.

The Bears dropped to 7-10 (1-3 MEAC) overall, while the No. 63 ranked Blue Hens improved to 15-2 on the season and 10-1 on their home court.

In doubles play, Delaware took the early advantage by winning two of the three matches. The No. 3 doubles team of Ids Waterbolk and Mason Robins blanked Morgan's doubles team of Rhajzon Rankins and Antonio Santos, 6-0. The No. 1 doubles team of Karol Malirz and Javier Ruiz won their match against the Bears' duo of Mikeal Carpenter and Niles Rachal, 6-1.

In singles play, Delaware won five of the six matches to clinch the victory.

The No. 4 singles match was not close, as Delaware's Tobey Lock defeated Morgan's Kondwani Patterson, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 6 singles match was another lopsided affair, as Nicholas Gore defeated Antonio Santos, 6-0, 6-0.  The Blue Hens won the No. 2 singles match when Javier Ruiz outlasted Niles Rachal, 6-3, 6-0.

The No. 3 singles match was a close contest, but Delaware's Nikolaj Talimaa ultimately defeated Rhajzon Rankins, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5. Alexandre Gluck recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Bertin Karenzi at No. 5 singles.

The No. 1 singles match was a close contest, but Morgan's Mikeal Carpenter ultimately defeated Delaware's Karol Malirz, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6, to help the Bears avoid being shutout.

Morgan State will return to action on Tuesday, April 16, when they host the Saint Joseph's Hawks at the Lake Clifton Park Tennis Courts.
