MEPs outline their demands of European leaders ahead of the EU summit, which is set to focus on Ukraine and the Middle East, crisis prevention, migration. On 19-20 December, EU Heads of State or Government will review the latest developments in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the EU’s support for Kyiv, amidst the uncertainty of the new US administration’s approach to the conflict. The European Council will also assess the situation in the Middle East, following the recent ceasefire in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel, while the humanitarian crisis in Gaza persists and there are still dozens of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.

During the ceremony at December’s plenary session in Strasbourg, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola paid tribute to their fight to restore democracy in Venezuela.

Parliament recognises the opposition as the legitimate winners of Venezuela’s July 2024 presidential election, and condemns the electoral fraud and rights violations carried out by the Maduro regime that stayed in power despite mass protests.

The Sakharov Prize is the EU’s highest award for human rights defenders. The other finalists from 2024 were Azerbaijani anti-corruption activist Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu and the Women of the Sun and Women Wage Peace movements, which promote reconciliation and understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.

Parliament hands 2024 Sakharov Prize to Venezuelan opposition

Le Parlement européen a remis le prix Sakharov 2024 pour la liberté de pensée à la dirigeante de l’opposition vénézuélienne María Corina Machado et au président élu Edmundo González Urrutia.

Lors de la cérémonie organisée au cours de la session plénière de décembre à Strasbourg, la présidente du Parlement européen Roberta Metsola a rendu hommage à leur combat pour le rétablissement de la démocratie au Venezuela.

Le Parlement reconnaît l’opposition comme la gagnante légitime de l’élection présidentielle de juillet 2024 au Venezuela ; il condamne la fraude électorale et les violations des droits perpétrées par le régime Maduro, qui était resté au pouvoir malgré les manifestations de masse.

Le prix Sakharov est la plus haute distinction de l’Union européenne pour les défenseurs des droits de l’homme. Les autres finalistes de 2024 étaient le Dr Gubad Ibadoghlu, militant anti-corruption azerbaïdjanais, ainsi que les mouvements « Women of the Sun » et « Women Wage Peace » qui promeuvent la réconciliation et la compréhension entre Israéliens et Palestiniens.

Le Parlement européen remet le prix Sakharov 2024 à l’opposition vénézuélienne

The European Parliament has awarded the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.

Parliament recognised the opposition as rightful winners of July 2024’s presidential election and rejected the widespread electoral fraud and the proclaimed victory of Nicolas Maduro.

With the EU’s highest honour for human rights defenders, Parliament pays tribute to Ms Machado and Mr González Urrutia’s fight to restore democracy, and stands with those defending freedom against authoritarian regimes worldwide.

Après un examen attentif des candidatures, vos représentants au Parlement européen ont approuvé la prochaine Commission européenne, l’organe exécutif du bloc.
Ursula von der Leyen a présenté sa nouvelle équipe après sa réélection au poste de présidente de la Commission en juillet dernier. Les députés ont donné leur feu vert à ce projet à l’issue du débat qui s’est tenu à Strasbourg le 27 novembre.
Début novembre, les députés européens ont interrogé les futurs commissaires lors d’auditions spéciales de confirmation pour évaluer leurs compétences et leur parcours.
La Commission s’efforce de proposer des politiques et des lois essentielles à la vie de 450 millions d’Européens. Désormais, le Parlement surveillera ses membres de près, afin de s’assurer qu’ils répondent aux besoins et aux attentes des électeurs.

On 27 November 2024, during the plenary session in Brussels; MEPs discuss the Commission's proposal for a Council recommendation on smoke and aerosol-free environments, to replace Council Recommendation 2009/C296/02.The proposed recommendation calls on Member States to extend the coverage of smoke free environment policies to key outdoor areas, including: outdoor recreational areas for children (public playgrounds, amusement parks, swimming pools, zoos and other similar outdoor spaces); outdoor areas connected to healthcare and education premises (hospitals, health centres, schools, training centres); outdoor areas associated to a place of work; public buildings; service establishments (restaurants, bars, cafés); transport stops and stations (bus, tram, train, airports). It also recommends that Member States extend smoke-free policies to emerging products such as electronic cigarettes.

This Infoclip marks 1000 days of the bravery and courage of the people of Ukraine. Due to Russia's attack, Ukraine has been experiencing a major energy production deficit. Over the course of 2022 and 2023, about half of Ukraine’s power generation capacity was either occupied by Russian forces, destroyed or damaged – and approximately half of large network substations were damaged by missiles and drones.
