Staff Sports Medicine Internship Facilities Student-Athlete Resources Information for Visiting Teams Emergency Action Plans

Under the direction of Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Jim Berry, MA, ATC, and under the supervision of team physicians and orthopedic surgeons, the staff athletic trainers at the United States Naval Academy are committed to providing and facilitating the health care of the student-athletes. The staff collaborates with these and other medical providers, team coaches, and staff to optimize the physical performance of the student-athletes.

The profession of Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions. The staff athletic trainers at the United States Naval Academy are health care professionals who hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees, are certified by a national board, the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer, and are licensed by the Maryland Board of Physician.

There are four principal athletic training rooms and six satellite facilities at the disposal of the Naval Academy staff. In addition, there are several fully staffed medical clinics on the grounds of the Naval Academy, including orthopedic, dental, physical therapy, optometry and general medical clinics.

Sports Medicine Internship

The mission of the Intern Athletic Training position is to provide a clinical and educational experience to prepare entry-level athletic trainers as they enter into the ever-expanding allied health profession of athletic training. This will be accomplished by utilizing a combination of independent clinical experiences to help increase professional confidence, as well as a structured educational program designed to improve clinical skills, develop leadership qualities and increase knowledge in the field of sports medicine. Athletic trainers who participate will be placed in settings to independently care for athletes and utilize that experience to improve their clinical skills and their educational knowledge in order to better prepare them for a successful career as a certified athletic trainer.

Opportunities:
* Monthly CEU educational series (BOC CEU Provider). 
* One on one mentorship from one of the staff athletic trainers.
* Work with multidisciplinary sports medicine team including but not limited to: Orthopedic Surgeons, Sports Medicine Physicians, General Medical Physicians, Physician Assistants, Podiatrists, Sports and Clinical Psychologists, Nutritionists, Sports Performance Coaches, and Physical Therapists.

* Opportunities to observe orthopedic surgeries.
* Opportunities to observe military trainings.

Responsibilities: 
* Operate within all scopes of practice as an athletic trainer for the team(s) assigned.

* Coverage of intercollegiate athletic team practices and games.

* Athletic training facility management per facility standards.

* Communication with the team physician and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

* Other duties as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine.

Visiting team athletic training services: For most competitions the sideline set-up will consist of coolers of water, chests of injury ice, sleeves of cups, and emergency care supplies. For additional sport specific information, please contact the athletic trainer listed for the respective sport.
