Commission approves new geographical indication ‘Livanjski sir' from Bosnia and Herzegovina

EU-BiH

The Commission has approved the addition of ‘Livanjski sir' from Bosnia and Herzegovina to the register of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).

‘Livanjski sir' is a hard, full-fat cheese crafted from cow's milk, sheep's milk, or a blend of both. It boasts a slightly sweet taste, reminiscent of walnut kernels, and develops a pleasantly piquant flavor as it ages. Its distinctive aroma, influenced by local aromatic herbs, originates from livestock grazing on the region's unique vegetation, infusing the milk with its signature character—the secret of the cheese's distinctiveness.

The cheese has been produced in the Livno region of western Bosnia and Herzegovina, for over a century, using methods passed down through generations. Together with the specific environmental conditions of the region, including a mix of Mediterranean and continental climates, the traditional production techniques ensure the exceptional quality and reputation of 'Livanjski sir'.

The new denomination will be added to the list of 3,639 agricultural products already in the Union register for agricultural geographical indications. The list of all registered geographical indications can be found in the eAmbrosia database. More information is available online at Quality Schemes and on our GIView portal
